Vinayaka Chaturthi

Vinayaka Chaturthi, also known as Ganesha Chaturthi (Monthly), is observed every month on the Chaturthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha—the fourth day after the New Moon. According to Hindu scriptures, all Chaturthi tithis are dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the deity of wisdom and auspicious beginnings. This day marks the monthly birth celebration of Lord Ganesha, distinct from the grand annual festival celebrated in Bhadrapada, which is popularly known as Ganesh Chaturthi.

📖 Vinayaka Chaturthi Katha (Story)

According to ancient scriptures, fasting on Vinayaka Chaturthi brings immense blessings. Hindu tradition states:

  • There are two Chaturthis in every lunar month—Shukla Chaturthi (Vinayaka Chaturthi) and Krishna Chaturthi (Sankashti Chaturthi).
  • Listening to or reading the Ganesh Vrat Katha removes sorrows, improves fortune, and purifies the mind.

Popular Story

Once, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were seated near the banks of River Narmada. Parvati suggested they play Chaupar, but Shivaji asked who would judge their victory. Parvati created a child-like figure from stray grass and infused life into it. She assigned him as the witness of the game.

Parvati won all rounds, but the grass‑boy incorrectly declared Shiva the winner. Enraged, Parvati cursed the boy, causing him suffering. Realizing his mistake, the boy pleaded for forgiveness. Parvati blessed him and predicted that in the month of Shravan, Naga Kanyas (serpent maidens) would visit to worship Lord Ganesha, and by observing the same fast, he would regain his glory.

Following the Ganesha Vrat taught by the Naga Kanyas, the boy fasted for 12 days. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Ganesha appeared, blessed him, and reunited him with his divine parents on Mount Kailash.

This story emphasizes the transformative power of devotion and the Ganesha Vrat.
