Savitri Vrat Story (Katha)
King
Ashvapati and his queen, childless for years, worshipped Lord Savitra
(Sun God). Pleased with their devotion, the deity blessed them with a daughter—Savitri,
named in his honor.
As
Savitri grew up, she chose Satyavan, the exiled prince and son of a
blind king, as her husband. Upon hearing this, Narad Muni warned that
Satyavan had only one year to live. Despite the prophecy, Savitri
married him with unwavering commitment.
When
the destined day arrived, Satyavan collapsed under a banyan tree while chopping
wood. Lord Yama appeared to take his soul, but Savitri followed Him,
refusing to leave her husband.
Impressed
by her devotion, Yama granted her three boons—excluding Satyavan’s life:
1. Restoration
of her father‑in‑law’s eyesight
2. Prosperity
for her maternal family
3. Blessing
for a hundred sons
Realizing
that she could not bear sons without her husband, Yama was compelled to restore
Satyavan’s life.
This
miracle created the tradition of Vat Savitri Vrat, symbolizing a wife’s
undying love and devotion.
