SIVANANDA YOGA CENTRES

Sivananda Yoga is a spiritual yoga style created by Swami Vishnudevananda that incorporates, but is not limited to, asanas (yoga postures). He named this system, as well as the international Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centresorganisation in charge of spreading its teachings, after his guru, Swami Sivananda, with the mission of'spreading the teachings of yoga and the message of world peace,' which has since been refined to 'practise and teach the ancient yogic knowledge for health, peace, unity in diversity, and self-realization.'

Swami Vishnudevananda created the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres in 1957, and named it after his master, H.H. Sri Swami Sivananda Saraswati Maharaj, one of the most prominent spiritual teachers of the twentieth century. The organisation promotes real yoga and vedanta teachings, carrying on the legacy of the two great yoga teachers and maintaining their purity and history, which dates back thousands of years. At the heart of all yoga is their message that the individual must change before the world can change. We are a spiritual growth and learning centre that has taught thousands of yoga instructors across the world since 1963. The mission is to spread the teachings of classical yoga, integrating the Four Paths of Yoga through the Five Points of Yoga of Swami Vishnudevananda into a means to achieve physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing, and self-realisation. We uphold the practice of all aspects of the classical teachings of a synthesis of yoga with a strong emphasis on practical experience. Swami Sivananda’s dictum ‘an ounce of practice is worth tons of theory’ is strictly followed. Many of the teachers dedicate their lives to the study and practise of yoga, living within the Organisation as renunciants or swamis. The International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres, with headquarters in Val Morin, Canada, are represented in over twenty-six countries and are governed by an executive board of senior followers of Swami Vishnudevananda. We have four Ashrams and five Centres in India, located in Neyyar Dam (headquarters), Madurai, Uttarkashi, and Gudur. The Ashrams are spiritual retreats where people can reside and study under the supervision of a teacher. In the middle of the hustle and bustle of city life, our Centres offer a haven of serenity. They provide a relaxing atmosphere suitable to yoga study and practise. Swami Sivana's teachings and practises are available at each of the Centers and Ashrams.
