Swami Rama founded Sadhana Mandir Trust on the banks of the Ganges in Rishikesh, India, in 1966 as an international retreat centre for serious seekers to practise meditation in a spiritually uplifting atmosphere. Sadhana Mandir is set on the banks of the holy river Ganges, away from the noise and activity of Rishikesh, hidden in the foothills of the Himalayas. A peaceful and serene environment pervades the ashram, which is surrounded by magnificent blooming gardens, mango trees, and a lotus pond, making it perfect for sadhana.
At least 5,000 years have passed since the Himalayan Tradition began. It may be traced back to an uninterrupted line of sages who passed down the tradition through oral transmission and personal spiritual initiation. Although renunciates had lived in an uninterrupted tradition since the Vedic period, Adi Shankara founded the ascetic order around 1,200 years ago. The Tradition provides particular ways for mind training. Scientific, methodical, and inward-directed approaches are used.
