Rath Yatra

Rath Yatra, also known as Jagannath Rath Yatra, is one of India’s most revered and ancient chariot festivals. It is celebrated annually in Puri, Odisha, at the sacred Jagannath Temple, and is believed to be one of the oldest Rath Yatras in the world. On this auspicious day, the deities Lord Jagannath, Goddess Subhadra, and Lord Balabhadra are ceremoniously placed on grand, beautifully decorated chariots and pulled by thousands of devotees along a 3 kilometer route from Jagannath Temple to Gundicha Temple. Another historic celebration is the Mahesh Rath Yatra in West Bengal’s Serampore, considered the second oldest chariot festival in India, celebrated since 1396.

🌟 Significance of Rath Yatra

The word Jagannath comes from “Jagat” (Universe) and “Nath” (Lord), representing Lord of the Universe. Lord Jagannath is worshipped as a form of Lord Vishnu.

The festival symbolizes:

  • Devotion and surrender to the divine
  • Purification of sins by pulling the holy chariots
  • Unity among devotees, regardless of caste or background
  • A rare opportunity to witness Lord Jagannath outside the sanctum

According to tradition, pulling the chariots is considered a sacred act that helps devotees cleanse past karma and receive divine blessings.

The festival is also called:

  • Gundicha Yatra
  • Chariot Festival
  • Navadina Yatra
  • Dasavatara Yatra

Millions of devotees from India and abroad participate to seek blessings and fulfill their vows.
