Rameswaram is one of India's oldest and most well-known pilgrimage sites. It is related to the Ramayana period of history. Rameswaram Temple is also a representation of Indian honesty. The Kasi pilgrimage is regarded as one of the most important religious responsibilities of the people. Only after worshipping Ramanathaswamy at Rameshwaram is the kasi yatra complete. Rameswaram is the only south Indian siva temple among India's four major temples: Rameswaram, Dawrka, Puri, and Badrinath. Rameswaram is the lone Shiva temple among these four Dhams, while the other three are Vaishnava temples. Eleven of the twelve Jyotirlingas are in the north, with only Rameswaram in the south. The name Rameswaram comes from Sri Ramapran's worship of Shiva (Ishvara) in this location. Thirunavukkarasar, Thirugana Sankara, Arunagirinathar Muthuswami Dixithar, and many more saints have sung the glories of Shiva and the goddess of this temple in their hymns. Teh temple is located on a 15-acre picturesque conch-shaped island. The 22 sacred theerthams found within the temple cleanses the body and heart. Taking a holy bath in one of these theerthams is regarded extremely sacred.

Significance of Rameswaram Temple

Rameshwaram Ramanthaswamy Temple, along with Badrinath, Dwarka, and Puri, is one of the holy char Dham (Four Divine Sites). This heavenly illumination is also one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, which represent Lord Shiva's boundless nature. The temple is frequently referred to as "Kashi of the South," indicating its importance.

It is one of the 274 Paadal Petra Sthalams, where Appar, Sundarar, and Tirugnana Sambandar, three of the most revered Nayanars (Saivite Saints), have worshipped the temple with their songs. Lord Shiva is said to exist. From here, the Rama Sethu, the famed bridge that the Lord walked through to reach Sri Lanka, was built.

According to the Skanda Purana, 24 Tirthas (Holy Water Bodies) are significant. A holy bath in these Tirthas is a primary goal of the Rameswaram pilgrimage and is regarded similar to purification. Within Ramanathaswamy Temple, there are 22 Tirthas, the first and most important of which is known as Agni Theertham (Bay of Bengal).
