Purnima Vrat is a sacred Hindu fasting practice observed on every full moon day to honor deities such as Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, and Goddess Lakshmi. Devotees observe a fast from sunrise until moonrise, seeking prosperity, spiritual purification, and protection from negative energies. In South India, this auspicious observance is popularly known as Pournami Vratam.
đș Significance
of Purnima Vrat
According to the Puranas, Purnima, or the full moon day, is deeply connected with themes of birth, rebirth, manifestation, and new beginnings. On this auspicious day, the Moon completes a full cycle around the Earth, symbolizing the close of one chapter and the start of another. Devotees observe Purnima Vrat to honor Chandra Deva and to receive divine blessings through the Moonâs brightest and most powerful light.
From a scientific perspective, the full moon has a noticeable influence on Earth. The Moonâs gravitational pull becomes stronger, affecting ocean tides and also impacting the human body, which contains a significant percentage of water. Fasting on this day is believed to help balance the bodyâs water content, reduce acidity, improve digestion, and enhance overall brain function.
Vedic astrology also considers Purnima extremely auspicious. Individuals born on a full moon day are believed to have sharp intelligence, strong intuition, and naturally attractive personalities.

đ Vat Purnima Vrat Katha (SatyavanâSavitri Story)
During the Dwapar Yuga, Mother Yashoda once asked Shri Krishna to reveal a fast that could protect women from widowhood and fulfill the wishes of all human beings. Krishna replied that the Dwatrisha Vrat, observed on 32 fullâmoon days, grants unbroken good fortune, prosperity, and the blessings of Lord Shiva. He then narrated the first story of this vrat. There was once a prosperous city called Katika, ruled by King Chandrahas. In this city lived a noble Brahmin named Dhaneshwar and his virtuous wife. Although they had wealth and a harmonious life, the absence of children caused them sorrow. A great yogi visited the city and accepted alms from everyone except Dhaneshwarâs home. Hurt and confused, the Brahmin asked the yogi the reason. The yogi replied, âA childless home is considered incomplete. If you are blessed with a child, I will accept alms from you.â Dhaneshwar pleaded for a solution, and the yogi advised him to worship Goddess Chandi with devotion. Dhaneshwar went to the forest, observed a strict fast, and worshipped the Goddess. After sixteen days, Chandi appeared in his dream and blessed him with a son who would live only sixteen years. However, she instructed, âIf you and your wife observe 32 fullâmoon fasts, your sonâs life will be prolonged. Tomorrow, a mango tree will appear here. Pluck its fruit, give it to your wife after her bath, and she will conceive.â The next morning the tree appeared, but Dhaneshwar struggled to climb it. Praying to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, he gained strength, plucked the fruit, and gave it to his wife. In time, she gave birth to a beautiful child named Devidas. Devidas grew into a wise, wellâbehaved boy. Meanwhile, his mother completed all 32 fullâmoon fasts. As the predicted sixteenth year approached, Dhaneshwar feared seeing his sonâs death. So Devidas was sent to Kashi with his maternal uncle to study. On their journey, they stayed in a village where a Brahmin girlâs wedding was taking place. When the groom fell ill, the family requested Devidas to marry the girl, and the marriage was performed. Later, Devidas revealed the prophecy of his short life to his new wife. She promised to remain devoted to him always. Before leaving, he gave her a ring and told her to plant a Mallika flower and watch it daily. âWhen I die, the flowers will dry. When they bloom again, you will know I am alive,â he said. In Kashi, a snake sent by fate tried to bite Devidas, but failed because the vrat protected him. Soon, Kaal himself arrived to take him. At that moment, Mother Parvati and Lord Ganesha intervened. Parvati pleaded with Lord Shiva, reminding him of Devidasâs motherâs devotion. Shiva granted Devidas his life back. Meanwhile, his wife saw the Mallika plant bloom again and joyfully informed her family. On their search, they met Devidas returning from Kashi. The families reunited, and Devidas returned home with his wife. His parents embraced him with joy and offered charity in gratitude. Krishna concluded, âThis is the power of the 32 fullâmoon fast. Women who observe it never face widowhood and remain blessed for many births. This vrat fulfills all desires and grants prosperity and protection.â
