Kartik Purnima (Tripuri Purnima, Tripurari Purnima, Dev-Diwali or Dev-Deepawali)

For Hindus, Kartik Purnima is an auspicious day. Kartik Purnima, also known as Tripuri Purnima or Tripurari Purnima, occurs on the 15th lunar day (end of the month) of Kartik.

Tripurasura had conquered the entire universe, destroyed the gods, and built three cities in space that were collectively known as "Tripura." The gods were pleased at Shiva's slaughter of the demon(s) and destruction of his/their cities with a single arrow, and they declared the day a festival of illuminations.

Significance

On the day of Kartik Purnima, devotees ideally should get up early morning (before sunrise) and take a dip in the holy water of River Ganga. This is known as ‘KartiSnana’. In case this is not possible because of restrictions imposed owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, you can mix holy water in normal water at home and take a bath with that. Then, light lamps inside and outside your home. Offer prayers and Kheer as Bhog to Lord Vishnu. You can also perform Havan at home on Kartik Purnima and indulge in charity.

Ritual (pooja, vrat etc.)

Puja Vidhi: Devotees should preferably get up early in the morning (before sunrise) on Kartik Purnima and take a plunge in the holy Ganga water. This is referred to as ‘KartiSnana.' If this is not feasible because to COVID-19 pandemic limitations, you can make a holy water bath at home by mixing holy water with regular water. Then, both inside and outside your home, turn on lighting. Offer Lord Vishnu prayers and Kheer as Bhog. On Kartik Purnima, you can also conduct Havan at home and donate.
During this holiday, devotees observe several practises. The following is a list of the ceremonies that the celebrants perform:
• All devotees are required to wash in the Ganges or any other sacred river on this day, according to Hindu scriptures.
• People also burn diyas (earthen lights) to commemorate Lord Vishnu's triumph. They think he returned to his home once his banishment was over. Devotees carry Lord ‘Shiva' statues and pictures in a procession. After worshipping them, they immerse them in the water.
•All deities are served a Prasad called ‘Annakutta' at temples.
Some devotees also worship Lord Shiva at sunrise or moonrise along the banks of sacred rivers.
·         Devotees then participate in the ‘Bhandara’ and ‘Anna Daan’ rituals. This is done for gaining assets and prosperity throughout the coming year.

Celebrations

Kartik Purnima is a five-day festival, followed by TulasiVivah Utsav, which is celebrated on Prabodhini Ekadashi day. TulasiVivah can be done between Ekadashi and Purnima in the month of Kartik on any acceptable day. The fasting that begins at the beginning of Ekadashe concludes on the day of Kartika Purnima BhishmaPanchaka or Vishnu Panchaki. A day before Kartik Purnima, Vaikunto Chaturdashi and Puja are done. According to traditions, on the day of Kartik Purnima, Lord Shiva kills demon Tripura, which is why Tripuri Purnima and Tripurari Purnima are known. On Kartik Purnim's day Gods were glad when the demon Tripurasura was slain. Hence, this day is also known as Dev-Diwali.

Kartik Purnima among Hindus

On Kartik Purnima in Odisha, worshippers celebrate Boita Bandana by going to a water body and launching small boats. Fabric, candles, and betel leaves are used to light these, which are constructed from coconut sticks and banana stems.

KarthikaMaasalu is the name of the holy month of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The celebration here begins on Deepawali/Diwali day and continues until the end of the month. During this time, celebrants burn lamps to mark the occasion. Finally, on Karthika Puranam which is the full moon day, oil lamps with 365 wicks are made at home, and these are lit in Lord Shiva temples.

Kartik Purnima among Jains

Jains commemorate the occasion by going to Palitana, a pilgrimage site. The devotees congregate in the Palitana taluka's Shatrunjay hills' foothills. They then go on an extremely fortunate adventure. The Shri ShantrunjayTeerth Yatra is a 216-kilometer journey across difficult terrain. This trek is made barefoot, and worshippers arrive at the Lord Adinath temple at the summit of the hill to pray.

On Kartik Purinima, the magnificent Pushkar fair comes to a close. Prabodhini Ekadashi, a week or so before Kartik Purnima, marks the start of the fair. The last day to conduct TulsiVivah is Kartik Purnima.
Fruits, milk, and mild sattvik cuisine sans onion and garlic can be consumed during the Kartik Purnima fast. A 'nirjala' fast is not recommended if you are elderly, ill, or pregnant (a kind of fast where you cannot even consume a drop of water).
